Beadable items, however, offer a welcoming entry point into the craft by eliminating some of the learning curve. They provide a sturdy, durable base, letting you focus on the fun part—choosing and arranging beads to create a beautiful design.

But don’t be fooled—there’s still skill involved! While beadable items simplify some aspects, they enable you to develop an eye for design and pattern. A great beading pattern is more than just “slinging beads”; it requires a thoughtful selection that fits the beadable space and brings out the best in your chosen beads.

And then there’s the bead hole size challenge! For some, finding beads other than silicone beads with the correct hole size can feel like a mini victory. Not every bead shop makes it easy to sort by hole size, which adds another layer of creativity and problem-solving to the craft. (But more on that in a future blog!) Today, we’re diving into how to create a stunning beadable pen.

• Beadable pen with a beadable pin (sometimes referred to as a beadable bar or post)
• Beads in various colors, sizes, and styles (make sure they fit the pin - typically, you'll need beads with a hole of at least 2.2mm)
• Glue (optional) for securing the pin to the pen
• Embellishments (optional) such as charms, tassels, or other items

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make a Beadable Pen

1. Choose Your Beadable Pen

Select a beadable pen that suits your style. This is the foundation of your design, so choose a finish and color you love. With the base in place, you’ll be ready to start adding personality to your pen!

2. Pick Your Beads

Now for the fun part—choosing your beads! Consider your color scheme, bead shapes, and any theme you want to bring out. The beauty of beadable pens lies in how customizable they are, allowing you to create designs that reflect your style.

3. Plan Your Pattern

Before threading beads onto the pin, lay them out in your chosen order. This step allows you to adjust your arrangement until it’s just right, ensuring an aesthetically pleasing pattern and a balanced design.

4. Thread the Beads onto the Pin

Slide each bead onto the pin, stacking them to form your design. Make sure they fit snugly so they don’t shift too much in use.  (This is particularly important if the bead hole size is significantly larger than the pin.) 

5. Secure the Pin with Glue (Optional)

If you want to make sure everything stays put, add a dab of glue to the pin base before attaching it to the pen, and another dab of glue to the pin top if the topper is detachable. This step is optional but helpful for keeping the beads secure.

6. Add Final Touches

If you’d like to personalize further, consider adding a charm or small embellishment to your pen. A bit of extra flair can add personality and make your design stand out even more.
