Once you know the post size, a good rule of thumb is to add about 0.3mm to the post size when selecting beads. Why? Beadable posts often have threading on one or both ends that is slightly larger than the post itself, so you’ll need that extra wiggle room. Additionally, bead holes are not always drilled or formed with perfect consistency, which can lead to some beads not fitting properly.

Pro Tip: Even with the right sizing, you may come across a few beads in your lot that don’t fit the post. Save these for other projects, or, depending on the material, use a bead reamer tool to carefully enlarge the hole. Use a soft touch with fragile materials like glass to avoid breakage.

Bead Options for Beadable Items

The world of beads is vast, but not all bead types are suitable for beadable projects. Here’s a breakdown of popular bead materials to consider:

Silicone beads, some varieties referred to as bubblegum beads, are a favorite for beadable items. Typically, they feature 2mm holes and are flexible, making them easy to work with even on posts with threading. Silicone beads come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, including many whimsical focal beads (definition below). Silicone beads are lightweight, which makes them ideal for handheld items like beadable pens. However, their exaggerated, almost cartoonish style isn’t for everyone.

• What’s a Focal Bead? A focal bead is a larger, standout bead often used as the centerpiece of a design. These beads are typically more decorative and can add personality and depth to your project.

Wood beads are another excellent choice for beadables. They often have large holes, are lightweight, and can be customized with paint for endless versatility. However, wood beads are not ideal for items exposed to moisture, such as kitchen tools, as they may swell or deteriorate over time.

As lovers of all things glass, we adore the way glass beads elevate beadable projects. Look for lampwork beads, European glass beads, African glass beads, and big-hole seed beads—these often have larger holes perfect for beadable posts. Glass beads bring a timeless elegance to your creations, though their weight should be taken into consideration.  We suggest using glass beads with beads of other materials to balance both weight and overall design.

Don’t overlook ceramic, clay, cinnabar, and gemstone beads! These materials offer a wide range of textures, colors, and styles. Just be mindful of their weight and durability for your specific project.

• Bookmark reliable suppliers who specialize in beads for beadables.
