Welcome to the final installment of our Discover the Art of Beadables series! Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored the many creative ways you can use beadable items to craft custom accessories and gifts. Now, we’re diving into a crucial aspect of beadable crafting: selecting the right beads. Whether you're working on pens, kitchen tools, or garden stakes, finding beads that fit and complement your project is essential to success.

Know Your Beadable Post Size

Before selecting any beads, the most important thing you need to know is the size of the beadable pin, post, or bar you’ll be using. This measurement determines the minimum bead hole size required. Savvy beadable sellers will always list this size in their product descriptions, as it’s impossible to choose compatible beads without it. Once you know the post size, a good rule of thumb is to add about 0.3mm to the post size when selecting beads. Why? Beadable posts often have threading on one or both ends that is slightly larger than the post itself, so you’ll need that extra wiggle room. Additionally, bead holes are not always drilled or formed with perfect consistency, which can lead to some beads not fitting properly.

Pro Tip: Even with the right sizing, you may come across a few beads in your lot that don’t fit the post. Save these for other projects, or, depending on the material, use a bead reamer tool to carefully enlarge the hole. Use a soft touch with fragile materials like glass to avoid breakage.

Bead Options for Beadable Items

The world of beads is vast, but not all bead types are suitable for beadable projects. Here’s a breakdown of popular bead materials to consider:

Silicone Beads

Silicone beads, some varieties referred to as bubblegum beads, are a favorite for beadable items. Typically, they feature 2mm holes and are flexible, making them easy to work with even on posts with threading. Silicone beads come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, including many whimsical focal beads (definition below). Silicone beads are lightweight, which makes them ideal for handheld items like beadable pens. However, their exaggerated, almost cartoonish style isn’t for everyone.

  • What’s a Focal Bead? A focal bead is a larger, standout bead often used as the centerpiece of a design. These beads are typically more decorative and can add personality and depth to your project.
Wood Beads

Wood beads are another excellent choice for beadables. They often have large holes, are lightweight, and can be customized with paint for endless versatility. However, wood beads are not ideal for items exposed to moisture, such as kitchen tools, as they may swell or deteriorate over time.

Glass Beads

As lovers of all things glass, we adore the way glass beads elevate beadable projects. Look for lampwork beads, European glass beads, African glass beads, and big-hole seed beads—these often have larger holes perfect for beadable posts. Glass beads bring a timeless elegance to your creations, though their weight should be taken into consideration.  We suggest using glass beads with beads of other materials to balance both weight and overall design.

Other Materials

Don’t overlook ceramic, clay, cinnabar, and gemstone beads! These materials offer a wide range of textures, colors, and styles. Just be mindful of their weight and durability for your specific project.

Don’t Forget Spacer Beads

Spacer beads are essential for beadable projects. They help you achieve balanced designs, ensure proper spacing, and often add a touch of texture or shine. Alloy spacers, in particular, are a favorite for their metallic luster. Keep a variety on hand to perfect your bead arrangements.

Finding the Right Beads

One of the biggest challenges in beadable crafting is finding beads with the correct hole size. Unfortunately, some bead sellers don’t list hole sizes in their product descriptions, which can make shopping frustrating. To simplify your search:

  • Look for sellers who clearly list bead hole sizes in their descriptions.
  • Seek out websites that categorize beads by hole size, or have a sort by hole size option.
  • Bookmark reliable suppliers who specialize in beads for beadables.

Shopping with knowledgeable sellers saves time and ensures your beads will work for your projects.
